Whats-a-happenin'

Hello!

I know it's a bit late- cough, for a change, but I'm showing in this years Northern Graduates show at the Curwen Gallery in London. There are some amazing people this year including a fantastic print maker from Manchester uni called Jennifer Kate McIntyre http://www.curwengallery.co.uk/gallery/ngrads11/title.htm
who i love, (and no, I'm not biased)... and obviously, my friend Nat is also showing, who is not only brilliant, but also a really great guy too...

So if you have chance, get to 34 Windmill Street and you'll find us there!

Massive thanks to Henry Walsh for curating, and to all the guys who helped me get my things there in one piece.

Sand Paper and Poly Filler

With less than 3 weeks to go until hand in, and the big one.... I have actually finished painting my walls for the degree show (well, almost finished). All the third years got to make a request for which space they wanted, so after great deliberation, I choose two worthy spots; only to not have either. Instead, I have a very large, rather daunting space in 415a (forth floor for those of you who make it to the exhibition.) But I'm actually really really pleased with it.

So start day was this Tuesday... and we were finally introduced to our first year helpers... Mine is a lovely girl called Kathryn. Also a print maker (some works to follow, when she sends me some pics!)

We set to work on Monday (a day early) sanding walls, removing numerous drawings of penises, (some detailed, some not so) and filling in deliberate gouges in the shape of smiley faces.

Here are a few photos of our progress so far... everyone, meet Kathryn- My most excellent helper (the one with paint on her face)

claire orange pots

The fabulous Claire Orange..
Made from found materials in her immediate location as a kind of tribute to the land, these experimental forms are produced using a variety of materials. Mostly she combines glass, clay, soil and stone as well as other natural materials to create unpredictable textures and colours. In her usual stubborn manner, Claire refuses to accept that the combination of materials may not work together. And although this may result in failure, it also serves up an accidental harmony in the work which i think is full of character but also vulnerability.

Brilliant! James Unsworth...

jamesunsworth.blogspot.com

James' work is about not looking. You know you probably shouldn't look at a decapitated head or a severed limb; you shouldn't want to see teenage mutant ninja turtles having sex, but that fact that you shouldn't is what makes it so compelling. There's an overwhelming need to look, recoil, cringe and then look again. I started to question myself, 'is it a problem that i find the grotesqueness in James' work so hilarious? More than anything, i love the fact that some people will be horrified by the masses of erect penises. FFFFFFantastic work.

Can we have more visiting artists like James Please?
